12-year-old Tennesseean Yhoana Arteaga was home alone last month when somebody started pounding on the door.
According to the Tennessean, it was August 10 when the Liberty Collegiate Academy student was left alone in the Nashville home while her mother took her siblings on a shopping trip.
Around 5:30 p.m., Arteaga sent her mother a concerning text message. She said that someone unknown was knocking on the door.
And when the mother came home just over an hour later, she made a horrifying discovery. According to People, the young girl’s family found her beaten and killed right inside their home.
The Metro Nashville Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the murder, but they didn’t have to look far. A longtime criminal, 45-year-old Roy D. Coons, lived just two doors down.Metro Nashville Police Department
The Tennessean reported that Coons has been convicted of roughly 30 criminal offenses since 1992, putting him at the top of the police’s list of potential suspects.
And after weeks of investigation, police gathered enough evidence to put Coons behind bars for the crime.
Police said that they did “scientific analysis” to conclude that Coons took part in the slaying, and it was allegedly pretty horrifying. Nashville Sgt. David Kautzman told WTVF:
“This is a horrible, brutal thing. I’ve never seen anything this brutal in my entire career.”
Autopsy results showed that the 12-year-old was found with a number of injuries around her neck and head. Her clothes were also found to be disheveled. There were also signs of blunt force on her body, according to the Tennessean.
There were no signs of forced entry to the home, which means the little girl likely let Coons inside of her own free will.
On Monday, Coons was charged with attempted rape of a child, aggravated burglary, first-degree premeditated murder, and two counts of first-degree murder.
He is currently being held without bail and has yet to enter a plea.
