Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard seem to be in marital bliss — but they weren’t always picture-perfect.
In a recent interview, Bell revealed that their four-year marriage had a rocky and toxic beginning.
The “Frozen” star opened up to Harry Connick Jr. on Wednesday’s episode of “Harry” that the pair were initially smitten with one another:
“When we first met, we fell madly in love and I love the dramatic exit. There is nothing I crave more.”
But then things got a little rocky. The 37-year-old admitted that the pair would burst out bickering during the first year of their relationship, struggling to find their footing:
“We’d get in a fight, because we would fight a lot, and I’d, like, yell something then slam the bedroom door, then I’d slam the front door, then I’d get in my car and then I’d skid out the driveway and I would sit around the corner in my car and it felt so good and I realized how incredibly toxic it was only after he pointed it out.”
It wasn’t until Shepard intervened that Bell noticed that her reactions were unhealthy and unproductive:
“Three months into our relationship he was like, ‘You can’t leave anymore during fights. I’m not going to do that.’”
Shepard put his foot down, giving Bell a strong ultimatum:
“I was like, ‘What?’ He’s like you can’t do that, I’m not going to have a relationship. He has a very high standard and a strong code of ethics. He was like, ‘No, I have more respect for myself, I love you but I’m not going to do that my whole life.’”
It seems his ultimatum worked. Bell and Shepard were able to navigate their struggles and start a family, bringing two children into the world.
It looks like their hard work truly paid off.
