Journalist Katie Couric shared some exciting news with fans on Sunday.

Her 27-year-old daughter, Ellie Monahan, is engaged! And the ring her fiancé used to propose is extra special to the mom’s heart.

It was the very same engagement ring Couric’s late husband, Ellie’s father Jay Monahan, gave to her, she confirmed.

The excited mom said she was left in “happy tears” from the news. She wrote:

⭐️Ellie and Mark are engaged!🌟
And she’s wearing the ring her Dad gave to me.❤️ #happytears #heaskedmypermission#ikeptasecret #jaywouldbesoproud#mazelmazelgoodthings#takegoodcareofmybaby#ohjesusguessihavetothrowawedding#weloveyoumark #monster-in-law

Couric added that her future son-in-law asked her permission to propose and that she “kept a secret.”

Jay Monahan passed away in 1998 following a battle with colon cancer. Couric recently honored her late husband with an Instagram post on the 20th anniversary of his passing.

She wrote:

Twenty years ago today.
We miss you.

Their two daughters, Ellie, 27, and Caroline, 23, were just young children when he lost his battle with cancer.

But Couric said she knows he’d be happy to see their eldest engaged. The mom captioned the engagement photo, “#jaywouldbesoproud.”

You probably know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer, if you haven't had to contend with it yourself. As many of you know, in 1998, I lost my husband, Jay, to colon cancer. Three years later, I lost my sister, Emily, to pancreatic cancer. I felt so powerless as I watched this disease take the lives of two people who meant the world to me. I wanted to help spare other families the terrible heartbreak mine had endured, and I realized that new treatments had to be developed more quickly for the patients who needed them. With guidance from the smartest scientists and the support of the entire entertainment community, nine of us started @su2c to help do that. Nine years later, our researchers, doctors, patients and donors are rewriting what is possible by collaborating on cutting-edge treatments that are literally saving lives. Swipe through for survivors who have been helped by @SU2C research: Jacob Teel, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia; Trina Taylor, Colon Cancer; David Gobin, Lung Cancer; and Karen Taphorn, Melanoma. I invite you to join our movement that is ending cancer as we know it. With 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women getting some form of cancer in their lifetimes, the need is urgent. We are all about the science. 100% of every donation received by SU2C directly funds lifesaving research. This holiday season, please click the link in the bio to donate if you can. Couric, who also lost her sister to cancer, has since remarried to John Molner, an investment banker.

Last year, the television host told People that they met after being set up by mutual friends. It was love at first sight, she said:

“He finally asked me out, we met at a restaurant and what can I say? He had me at hello.”

They tied the knot in 2014. And now, the family seems ready to celebrate another joyous union.

Couric did not reveal whether or not her daughter and fiancé have a date picked out for their upcoming nuptials.
