Judge Judy’s colorful language isn’t confined to her courtroom. In a newly surfaced deposition, the relentless leader had some severe words for CBS regarding her worth, legacy and power.
Transcripts obtained by The Hollywood Reporter confirm the verified powerhouse of televised judge shows demands a lot, both from her guests and for her salary.
The loud and always colorful 74-year-old presence believes that without her, the network is powerless, sharply stating “their back’s to the wall.”
And she brings that power to her salary negotiations. According to the documents, Judge Judy checks in with the president of CBS over a meal every three years, with what Page Six calls “a list of demands.” She explained:
“We sit across the table, and I hand him the envelope and I say, ‘Don’t read it now, let’s have a nice dinner. Call me tomorrow. You want it, fine. Otherwise, I’ll produce it myself.”
With an average of 9.63 million viewers an episode, she may have the right to pull rank, often challenging ratings juggernauts such as “The Big Bang Theory.” Testimony suggests that she’s not here for any counteroffers, once refusing to negotiate with then-CBS head John Nogawski, flatly stating, “This isn’t a negotiation.”Araya Diaz/WireImage
The price for the sharp-tongued judge? About $47 million, The Hollywood Reporter added. Not a cheap dinner date, that’s for sure.
She shaded the broadcasting company with a loaded statement that she, unlike many other TV judges who came before her, is irreplaceable:
“They pay me the money that they do because they have no choice. They can’t find another one. They’ve tried to find another Judy. If they find another Judy, good for them. So far they haven’t. … And until they do, they have their local news on all their O&Os [owned-and-operated stations]. They have international, which we’re involved with the — the Judy program is all over the world, and even though they had to take a deep breath, they paid the money because they know otherwise. I’d take the same people with me that are producing the show now and I’d go and do it myself.”
It seems like regardless of their personal thoughts, bigwigs at CBS are forced to pay up. And Judge Judy is cashing out.
