Becoming a father is something John Stamos says he’s always wanted but never had the opportunity to be.

That all changed after the 54-year-old’s girlfriend, Caitlin McHugh, told him she was pregnant earlier this year.

As Stamos told People in an exclusive interview, he and McHugh had talked about starting a family, but he was surprised when she first revealed the news to him:

“We have the same morals and the same values, that all clicked nicely. So we said, ‘Oh, well, maybe we should have a family.’ McHugh suggested, ‘Maybe we should have a kid [before we get married]’ and I said, ‘Why?’ Stamos recalls, revealing his fiancée jokingly responded, ‘Because you’re old.'”

McHugh is 31 years old.

The soon-to-be mom recalled what Stamos’s face looked like when he learned his dreams were becoming a reality:

“The look on John’s face when I told him we were pregnant was priceless. It was the look of a man who has wanted a family of his own but wasn’t sure it was going to happen for him. Now it is!”

Stamos and McHugh got engaged at Disneyland this past October.

The engagement reportedly happened after the happy couple learned they were expecting. Stamos told People that he had always planned on putting a ring on McHugh’s finger, but after learning they were going to be parents, he thought it was as good a time as ever to pop the question.

The “Fuller House” actor explained:

“The [pregnancy] happened. Then I said, I better have a ring on her finger because it’s the right thing to do, and I wanted to marry her anyway. So I called her parents to ask, and it was like, ‘You better!'”

As far as how Stamos will be as a dad, he quipped that he had a lot of practice thanks to his roles on “Full House” and “Grandfathered.” He added that he plans on being “the fun dad.”

His fiancée couldn’t agree more.

According to McHugh, Stamos has the “biggest, most loving and generous heart of anyone I know”:

“I greatly admire his originality, creativity, ambition, work ethic and humor — all qualities I’m sure he’ll pass down to his child. He’s always been wonderful with kids, and I’m sure he will be an amazing father.”

Stamos wishes his parents could see him become a father, but he said that if it wasn’t for his parents being his guardian angels, he doesn’t think all of this would be happening for him right now.

The pair is currently focusing on becoming the proud parents of one, but Stamos admits that their growing family probably won’t stop there — he said both he and McHugh would like to have more than one child.
