Actress Jessica Biel isn’t anti-vaccination, but she is for parents having the right to choose if they want their kids to be vaccinated or not.

On June 12, Biel was photographed sitting alongside environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — who, as KOCO reports, is known as being an anti-vaccine advocate.

Both Biel and Kennedy Jr. were in Sacramento to lobby against SB 276. According to Calfornia Legislative Information, the bill proposes that a stated medical examiner has to approve people who are seeking medical exemptions for vaccinations:

Existing law prohibits the governing authority of a school or other institution from admitting for attendance any pupil who fails to obtain required immunizations within the time limits prescribed by the State Department of Public Health. Existing law exempts from those requirements a pupil whose parents have filed with the governing authority a written statement by a licensed physician to the effect that immunization is not considered safe for that child, indicating the specific nature and probable duration of their medical condition or circumstances, including, but not limited to, family medical history.

After Kennedy Jr. shared the photos on Instagram with the caption, “Please say thank you to the courageous Jessica Biel for a busy and productive day at the California State House,” fans began assuming the actress and mom of one was an anti-vaxxer.

Some fans slammed Biel for her activism:

Oh goodness no, you all are going to hurt so many people with your reckless self-invented “science”. Real scientists and years of actual practice conclusively show that vaccines save lives and prevent epidemics. This isn’t hard to understand people! So disappointed in you Jessica Biel.

As a physician and mother, I am horrified that you use this platform irresponsibility to spread misinformation that has been demonstrated through the highest levels of scientific inquiry available to be false. Vaccines DO NOT cause autism; never have, never will. This will quite literally lead to the death of children and immune-compromised adults like my cancer patients. Extremely disappointed in Jessica Biel, Kimberly Van Der Beek (unfollowing), and other celebrity band wagoners whose misunderstandings of medical evidence will be lethal.

Now, Biel is attempting to defend herself. Shortly after the images of her and Kennedy Jr. went viral, the actress, who is married to Justin Timberlake, took to her own Instagram to set the record straight.

This week I went to Sacramento to talk to legislators in California about a proposed bill. I am not against vaccinations — I support children getting vaccinations and I also support families having the right to make educated medical decisions for their children alongside their physicians. My concern with #SB276 is solely regarding medical exemptions. My dearest friends have a child with a medical condition that warrants an exemption from vaccinations, and should this bill pass, it would greatly affect their family’s ability to care for their child in this state. That’s why I spoke to legislators and argued against this bill. Not because I don’t believe in vaccinations, but because I believe in giving doctors and the families they treat the ability to decide what’s best for their patients and the ability to provide that treatment. I encourage everyone to read more on this issue and to learn about the intricacies of #SB276. Thank you to everyone who met with me this week to engage in this important discussion!

It remains unclear if Biel and Timberlake have vaccinated their own son.

However, her explanation wasn’t enough. Fans continued to slam Biel in the comment:

Every day I am more and more thankful for my son’s school! Vaccinations are MANDATORY there. If you choose not to vaccinate your kids, they can’t go there!

Cool. If you don’t want to vaccinate feel free to choose home educating as well.

If it’s a legit medical exemption your “dearest friend” has nothing to worry about. Thanks for adding fuel to an already danger fire being lit with all the vaccine fear mongering. This is just downright disgusting.

This is the dumbest most irresponsible stance. You’re perpetuating something that any doctor with competence has firmly asserted to be false. Such a disappointment coming from someone that so many look up to.

As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports, vaccines are “tested to ensure that they are safe and effective for children to receive at the recommended ages” and they are “essential because it helps provide immunity before children are exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases.”
