“Today” host Jenna Bush Hager dropped a surprise pregnancy announcement on the morning talk show this week.

The mom of two revealed she’s currently more than five months pregnant with her third child. She and her husband, Henry Hager, are expecting a baby boy, Dearly reported.

But the road to motherhood hasn’t always been easy for the 37-year-old. She revealed on Tuesday’s episode of “Today” that her first pregnancy was unsuccessful.

Hager said that she would have had another child before her eldest, 6-year-old Mila, but had a medical emergency, Entertainment Tonight reports.

She found out she was pregnant with her first child while on vacation and visited a doctor. Hager explained to Meredith Viera, who was filling in for Hoda Kotb:

“Before I had Mila, I had a pregnancy in my fallopian tube. It was my first pregnancy.”

Hager was soon informed that the pregnancy wasn’t viable, she said:

“I got to the doctor’s office and she said, ‘Yeah you’re pregnant, we gave the blood test, but we can’t find the baby.”

The “Today” host said she had an ectopic pregnancy, in which the egg attaches somewhere other than the uterus. She said:

“I had no idea what an ectopic pregnancy was. They looked up and the baby was in my fallopian tube.”

Because a fetus cannot develop properly outside the uterus, ectopic pregnancies pose a serious risk to the mother, according to Mayo Clinic.

If left untreated, ectopic pregnancies can cause the fallopian tube to rupture, leading to life-threatening internal bleeding.

Hager explained that she was quickly rushed into surgery after learning the news:

“It is very isolating. There is joy and there is pain.”

Thankfully, the mom’s current pregnancy appears to be healthy. She shared the happy news with her two daughters on Easter.

Her baby news came just days after co-host Hoda Kotb confirmed she adopted a second child, Dearly reported.
