Country singer Jason Aldean was shaken by the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas — and with good reason. The massacre, which killed 58 people and wounded nearly 500, took place during Aldean’s performance at the festival.

But on Saturday, Aldean’s wife, Brittany Kerr, gave birth to a boy — the couple’s first baby together — which may have helped restore hope for him and the families affected by the shooting.

Following the shooting in October, Aldean released a statement in which he revealed how afraid he was to raise children in a world in which something like this would happen.

He wrote on his Instagram account:

I truly don’t understand why a person would want to take the life of another. Something has changed in this country and in this world lately that is scary to see. This world is becoming the kind of place I am afraid to raise my children in. … My heart aches for the victims and their families of this senseless act.

In an interview with the “Today” show, Aldean said:

“For me … we’re all going to try and move on, and I have to do that as well, but it’s something that I’ll never forget.”

In his post on Instagram announcing the birth, Aldean wrote his son was a blessing after a tumultuous year.

He wrote:

So blessed today to see my little man come into the world. In a year that has been a rollercoaster ride, this is what it’s all about. I can’t wait to see what life has in store for this kid. Memphis Aldean… 9lb 5 oz. #mamawasarockstar

Kerr also posted on her Instagram account, thanking Aldean for being there for her throughout the birth.

She wrote:

Thanks for the amazing support… and enduring all the hand squeezing and nail digging… HANDS DOWN THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!

Aldean has two daughters, 14-year-old Keeley and 10-year-old Kendyl, from a previous marriage. Aldean posted a picture of himself, Brittany, and the girls when they met their brother for the first time:

Aldean acknowledged that the past year’s events were difficult. But the birth of his son may have shown him and anyone affected by the shooting that things may begin looking up.
