Like many parents, Jada Pinkett Smith wasn’t always able to monitor what her children were up to online.

Now, the mom of two says that she was “profoundly disturbed” when she realized her daughter, now 18, was actually exposed to porn on social media as a little girl.

Pinkett Smith opened up about the issue with her mother and daughter, Willow, on this week’s episode of “Red Table Talk.”

The 47-year-old said she knew her daughter was using the popular blogging site Tumblr around age 10 and 11 but wasn’t aware that hardcore porn was common on the platform.

She explained:

“I remember the first time I went on Willow’s Tumblr, she was 10 or 11. She was very matter-of-fact. She was like, ‘I’m going to my Tumblr page, but as we’re going to the Tumblr page, you’re going to see a lot of stuff. This has nothing to do with me.’ I was like, ‘OK.’ So she’s just scrolling, scrolling. And when I tell you I saw some of the most hardcore pornography on Tumblr…”

Pinkett Smith was shocked by what was accessible to her child. She said:

“I can’t believe kids are exposed to this on a daily basis. I was profoundly disturbed.”

The mom said that her daughter’s generation has “porn in [their] pocket” thanks to smartphones and social media. Unlike her generation, who relied on magazines and VHS tapes from “seedy” stores, she said.

In December 2018, Tumblr users went into an uproar after the site decided to ban pornography.

Many argued that the blogging site was a refuge for sexual subcultures that didn’t have other outlets, the Washington Post reported.

However, pornography may be returning to the website.

Pornography giant Pornhub told BuzzFeed News earlier this month that it’s “extremely interested” in buying the platform and returning it back to its erotic roots.

Thankfully for parents, the website has age restrictions that prevent users under 18 from viewing “explicit” material.

Regardless, Pinkett-Smith’s story can serve as a warning to other parents. In the age of social media, it’s becoming difficult to monitor exactly what your kids come across online.
