Actress Jada Pinkett Smith tied the knot with husband Will Smith in 1997 and the famed duo have since had two kids together, 19-year-old Jaden and 17-year-old Willow.
But even though they’re Hollywood royalty, Jada says their family has the same problems any would when raising teens with raging hormones.
The mom stopped by “Red Table Talk” earlier this week and she opened up about one particularly memorable talk with her teenage son, Us Weekly reports.
She said that Jaden asked to be fully emancipated when he was just 15.
Jada recounted the conversation to her son and other family members on the show:
“At 15 years old, Jaden, and I remember this day specifically. It’s probably one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life. You got to a point where you told me straight up, you were like, ‘Mom, I have to leave here to live my life.’”
Despite his young age, the mom said that she actually agreed. She said he could “manage his own life”:
“I remember thinking to myself, as devastated as I was, I was like, ‘He’s right. The time is now. He’s 15. It’s time for him to leave the house.’”
Jada said she ultimately decided it was okay because she knows that living the Hollywood life can be extremley stressful, and she wanted him to be able to escape.
The mom recalled:
“Being in this lifestyle, in this world, is a bubble, and he wanted out. I understood that because I didn’t have the bubble. I knew what having my freedom outside the bubble, what I gained from that. I knew the sooner I let him go, the faster he was going to come back.”
According to California law, there are several ways an underage teen can get emancipated, including marriage or joining the armed forces. But in most cases, a judge will need to see:
-You are at least 14 years old.
-You do not want to live with your parents. Your parents do not mind if you move out.
-You can handle your own money.
-You have a legal way to make money.
-Emancipation would be good for you.
However, Jaden ultimately backed out of the idea despite having his mother’s permission.
He’s now 19 and building a successful career as a rapper. But who knows how things may have turned out differently had he actually followed through with his plan to emancipate.
Jada also helped raise Will’s son from a previous marriage, 25-year-old Trey Smith.
