An Indiana boy, who has not been named by police, was just 13 years old when he allegedly killed his two younger siblings.
According to Fox 59, the first killing occurred May 2017. The boy’s half sister, 23-month-old Desiree McCartney, was found smothered to death with a towel.
The teen was declared a suspect and removed from the home by authorities.
But before the investigation was finished, the Indiana Department of Child Services placed him back inside the home.
And just 81 days after Desiree’s death, the teen’s stepbrother, 11-month-old Nathaniel Ritz, was also found smothered to death, WLWT reports.
In September 2017, the boy’s mother told investigators about some of his other disturbing actions.
She said that the boy tortured and mutilated a kitten around the time of the deaths, because he said that it “scratched him.”
Afterwards, the teen asked if he could go see “the kitten’s brains splattered everywhere.”
He’d also made comments about killing her because she had a prosthetic leg and “said that with all of her health problems, maybe she just needed to die.”
Investigators questioned the boy about his siblings’ deaths, and eventually he admitted the truth.
The teen, now 14, said that he smothered his siblings so that they won’t “have to live in the hell that he did.”
When asked what “hell” he meant, the boy replied, “chores.”
Court documents state that the boy “said he had help from an angel to free them,” and smothered the children until they “stopped making noise.”
After more than a year of investigation, the boy was taken to a juvenile detention center on August 28.
And on Monday, he attended a court hearing, where he learned he had been charged with murder in the deaths of his siblings.
At a press conference, Prosecuting Attorney Ric Hertel said:
“In my time here, which is 19 years, I’m not sure I’ve seen anything as disturbing as this.”
Hertel is aiming to have the boy charged as an adult.
If he is charged as a juvenile, he will be released in a few years at age 18.
