Within one day, Riona Kelly, 37, lost both her husband of 14 years and the use of her legs.

Although the mom of four can’t “remember exactly what happened” the day of her accident, she suffered a rare spinal stroke that left her paralyzed from the waist down after falling down a flight of stairs.

The Daily Mail reports that according to her ex-husband, Richard, he had asked for a divorce the previous morning. He said:

“Whilst she was in the hospital I visited as much as I could of an evening, I had to take care of the children, look after the house and run a business. I lived in the house with Riona and the kids until last June before I eventually moved out.”

Riona was devastated that her partner of 14 years left her during the time she “needed [her] husband the most.”

Doctors told Riona that she’d be able to take her first steps just six weeks after the accident. However, when six weeks came and went and Riona was still unable to move her legs, doctors changed their prognosis. She said:

“It was at this point doctors told me I would never walk again.”

Riona was self-conscious and uncomfortable in her wheelchair, hating the stares she believed she was getting. She said that:

“At the time I felt like giving up, but I knew I had to be strong for my children.”

She added:

“If someone had given me the choice I would’ve ended my life, I didn’t want to live anymore.”

However, just two weeks after doctors told her she’d never regain the ability to walk, Kelly took her first steps on the parallel bar. Although she was “dragging” her body and had “no feeling in [her] legs,” she was determined to make a full recovery — for her children.

Riona spent an additional four months in the hospital before she was finally able to return home.

When she finally took her first steps, “it felt amazing.” Riona only wanted to get stronger. She posted on Facebook looking for a personal trainer, and she ended up training with Keith Mason.

With Keith’s training and support, Riona has since completed two marathons “with the help of her wheelchair.” She said that while “Keith wanted to make a difference,” she ended up trading in her personal training sessions for an “affordable physio.”

However, the pair didn’t lose touch. In fact, they stayed in contact and their relationship blossomed into romance. She recalled:

“[T]hen one day Keith asked me out for coffee and we picked up from where we left off. I just couldn’t believe a gorgeous rugby player wanted to date a disabled woman like me.”

Having a best friend in a partner is a must. We walk & wheel through life together & together we face all obstacles. My best friend is my rock, my strength, my support, my happiness, my world. We sometimes choose the wrong people to share our lives with but when we trust in ourselves, have belief & respect for who we are, the choices that we make for a life partner is amazing!!! I've found the missing half of me, that piece of the puzzle that perfectly finishes the picture. Life is what you decide to make it & who you decide to make it with. Make sure you're decisions follow the dream life that you want. Riona and Keith have been living together for 11 months now, and she couldn’t be happier. She feels as though she’s finally found the “true meaning of a loving relationship.” Of her previous marriage, Riona said she was “miserable,” but because they had “built a life together,” they attempted to stick it out together.

But now Riona is no longer settling.

My King 👑 I thank the lord for bringing my soul mate into my life. Apart from my children I have never loved anyone the way that I love my best friend. He's shown me the true meaning of a loving relationship. A relationship that's strong. That works in harmony. That compromises. That's loyal & true & above all a relationship that just works so perfectly. I've heard for years that relationships are hard work & for years that's what I had until now. Loving you British Blue is effortless & thoroughly enjoyable. Here's to many years of happiness #❤️ #King #Queen #truelove #bestfriend #relationshipgoals #happytimes #future #bond #soulmate #mypurpose #myworld #inlove #boyfriend #girlfriend #partnership #inspire #keithandriona❤️

In addition to finding love again, Riona has defied all doctor’s expectations and can now walk unassisted in her home, only sometimes needing her crutches or wheelchair for long distances.

Although her journey to happiness has been challenging and long, Riona said, “Looking back, going through what I did was the best thing to ever happen to me.”
