When his wife wanted to adopt a child, Matthew Coda decided to reveal one of his darkest secrets.

As the San Francisco Chronicle reports, Coda was concerned about what would come up in an adoption background check. That’s why the 47-year-old from Menlo Park, California, told his wife he had been convicted 20 years ago on child pornography charges.

According to The Daily Journal, Coda swore to his wife that he no longer looked at child porn, and even agreed to let her look at his computer. That’s when his wife decided to launch her own investigation.

Enlisting the help of a “techie friend,” as the Chronicle reported, Coda’s wife thoroughly searched his computer. When they found more than 3,500 images of child pornography, she acted quickly and decisively. She kicked her husband out of the house, informed him she wanted a divorce, and tipped off the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

Detective Sal Zuno told the Chronicle that the wife’s cooperation helped them put together a case against Coda:

“The suspect’s wife contacted us and was able to provide us with information that her husband was in possession of child pornography. The investigation continued for several months, and with her help we were able to get evidence and images.”

Coda was arrested Monday when he got off his plane at San Francisco International Airport. He is currently being held on $200,000 bail.

District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe praised Coda’s wife for how she handled the discovery, calling her “an incredibly savvy person.” He told the Chronicle:

“She didn’t just look around herself and leave it at that. She enlisted someone who had real technical skills.”
