Hoda Kotb first became a mother at 52 years old, when she and her longtime partner, Joel Schiffman, adopted a little girl named Haley Joy in 2017.
In an earlier interview with Entertainment Tonight, Kotb explained that she always had dreams of becoming a mom before making the decision to adopt Haley:
“I always had this thing inside me like a voice that I couldn’t quiet. It was a voice that [told me I] wanted to be a mom, but I thought it was too late.”
Now, as the “Today” host revealed on the show, 2-year-old Haley Joy is officially a big sister and she and Schiffman are the proud parents of two little girls.
On Monday, Kotb teased her fans on Instagram by sharing an image that read, “Choose Hope.”
Now, her followers and fans of the show know why.
On April 16, Kotb told her colleagues on live television:
“It’s a girl! It’s a girl!”
The now 54-year-old shared a photo of herself holding her newest baby girl, Hope Catherine, while Haley clung on to her leg.
When asked how life with two children has been, an emotional Kotb replied:
“First of all, she’s laying on the boppy pillow right now and I’m feeding her and I can’t believe it. I’m so happy she’s here.”
Haley is also very excited to now have the title of big sister. Kotb said Haley knew exactly who Hope was when she first met her little sister:
“This morning at breakfast (Haley) was trying to feed (Hope) her raspberries and I was like, ‘Not yet, babe.’ She was literally marching around saying, ‘I’m a big sister!”’
Kotb went on to say she didn’t realize she had enough room in her heart to love another human being as much as she loves Hope.
“You know what’s funny? You think that you’re full. That’s exactly how I felt with Haley and Joel and everything. Joel and I were standing there when they hand you the baby, and it’s the closest thing to a live birth you’ll ever see, but in that moment I was like, ‘Oh my God, my heart just grew.’ It’s amazing. I can’t believe it’s happening.”
Kotb’s co-host, Jenna Bush Hager, took to Instagram to offer her congratulations following the big announcement.
I’m filled with indescribable JOY and yes, HOPE for this beautiful family. Happiest—and tear-filled for my Hoda!!!
Congratulations to Kotb and her growing family.
