After a waiter served a group of four teenagers on the night of their homecoming they left him a tip of $3.28. According to Bored Panda, the tip didn’t cover the level of service he provided, which frustrated the waiter.
However, much to the waiter’s surprise, one of the teens returned over a week later and dropped something off for him at the front desk.Helena Lopes/Pexels
On Imgur, the waiter, who went by the screen name Seminole, shared the experience.
The waiter posted:
Nothing more frustrating than when I get little to nothing for a tip and the customer is smiling and thanking me profusely as they exit.
However, the envelope the customer left for him containing a note and approximately $18.
The waiter posted:
I’ve been serving a long time, and nothing like this has ever happened to me, or anyone.
Here’s what the letter said:
Dear Mr. Waiter,
About a week and a half ago, on October 7, my 3 friends and I came to eat at this restaurant as our own homecoming celebration. It was an exciting experience for us to be here alone, and it was all new to us. And you were the best waiter we could ask for.
You were kind, helpful, accommodating, didn’t treat us like babies and were even able to fit the food to all my allergies!
So I wanted to say thank you for making our “grown up” experience so amazing and fun. I would also like to say sorry on behalf of my group.
Since we were new to all this, our 13 year old minds didn’t exactly know how to deal with the bill. You were super helpful in dividing the check up and taking our not-so-preferable cash.
The bill was reasonable, but we had completely forgotten (and frankly, didn’t know) what a tip even was, let alone how much to give.
So we emptied our pockets and all our money added up to $3.28. Not aware of how small this really was, we left, clueless of what we had left you for all your hard work.
Later, we realized our mistake and felt HORRIBLE. We knew we had to make it right. So in this envelope you will find the correct 18% tip + extra for simply being amazing.
We appreciate your help and patience, and thank you for making our night fun. Thank you!
— The 4 Teenagers From That Night
These teens should be commended for treating the server with dignity and respect by returning with the money they owed, not to mention the well-written, heartfelt letter.
According to the Chicago Tribune, parents can educate their teens and help prepare them for dealing with tips. Parents can advise their kids to bring extra cash with them when they go out with friends. Let your kids know that they should read the bill carefully to make sure that the tip hasn’t already been added to the bill.
Angie Hicks of “Angie’s List” said that a standard tip at a restaurant, hair or nail salon is 15 to 20 percent of the total after tax. It is considered good practice to include a modest tip — even if the service was lacking, the Tribune reports.
Hicks recommended explaining to your teen that many servers are only making minimum wage, so a tip can really go a long way.
In this case, the waiter was touched that the kids would return to tip him. In fact, he titled his Imgur post, “Faith in people restored.”
The waiter ended his post by addressing the teens directly:
I don’t know how you learned or educated yourself on tipping, but I really appreciate the effort and kindness. I hope your Homecoming was fantastic!
