A terrified 12-year-old boy ran from his home, screaming for help. He had just watched his father pick up a knife and use it on his mother.

According to ABC7, Aurelio Teran allegedly stabbed his wife, Viridiana Teran, to death in front of their child and fled from their California home before police arrived.

The 38-year-old man made a clean getaway from the scene of the crime, leading police to turn to the public for help in locating him.

As KTLA reports, a photo was released in the hope that someone would recognize Teran — and it was that photo that sparked the memory of a Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. when he responded to call about a “pedestrian in the roadway” after a man had been hit by a car.

The injured man was taken to a hospital, and he was also placed under arrest. The sergeant had quickly realized the person they were helping was the man wanted for fatally stabbing his wife in front of their son.

Lt. Michael Kocak told KTLA that the couple, who’d been married 12 years, did not have any prior domestic violence reports.

Teran has previously faced charges of burglary and drunk driving, but none of his prior arrests involved violence.

A motive for the killing has not been announced.

In the meantime, the 12-year-old survivor has been safely placed with protective services.
