A few weeks ago, actress Rachel McAdams pumped breast milk during a glamorous magazine photo shoot and shocked the internet.
Since the iconic image surfaced on social media, Hilary Duff decided to recreate McAdams’ “Girls Girls Girls” editorial shot by striking a similar pose with a hilarious everyday twist. And moms say it’s so much more relatable.
As previously reported by Dearly, the “Mean Girls” actress, 40, was participating in a photo shoot for the magazine when, between shots, photographer Claire Rothstein decided to take pictures of McAdams breastfeeding.
Many praised the celebrity mom for her revolutionary picture. However, others said the shared experience isn’t as relatable as perhaps it was intended to be, simply for the fact most women say they don’t look that “hot” while pumping.

A million reasons why I wanted to post this picture. Obviously #rachelmcadams looks incredible and was quite literally the dream to work with but also this shoot was about 6 months post her giving birth to her son, so between shots she was expressing/pumping as still breastfeeding. We had a mutual appreciation disagreement about whose idea it was to take this picture but I’m still sure it was hers which makes me love her even more. Breastfeeding is the most normal thing in the world and I can’t for the life of me imagine why or how it is ever frowned upon or scared of. I don’t even think it needs explaining but just wanted to put this out there, as if it even changes one person’s perception of something so natural, so normal, so amazing then that’s great. Besides she’s wearing Versace and @bulgariofficial diamonds and is just fucking major. Big shout out to all the girls ?? #rachelmcadams for @girls.girls.girls.magazine .com cover shoot ? @clairerothstein #pleaseshare . . . Side note: I did not look anywhere near as fabulous as this when feeding/pumping. And that’s ok too. . . . Stylist: @alicialombardini ? #girlsgirlsgirlsmag #girlsgirlsgirls #bringingbackthewoman #nogrungejustglamour #independentmagazine #printisnotdead #normalisebreastfeeding #normalizebreastfeeding #breastfeeding #life #women #versace #bulgari
Duff, however, appeared to nail the “realness” of an everyday mom’s pumping experience when she posted a similar pose on Instagram with a plastic shower cap and manual pump.
Duff, who welcomed her 2-month-old daughter in October, captioned the side-by-side images with a cheeky emoji and wrote:
Am I doing this right?
Commenters applauded Duff for sharing her own version of the original shot, noting that most working moms wouldn’t wear Versace and diamonds while pumping breast milk. Some wrote:
More like expectation vs. real life, lol. Totally nailed it! Love this pic so much.
I feel this so much.
However, others aren’t a fan of celebrities posting breastfeeding images on social media. A few commenters wrote:
These pictures are stupid. I breastfeed my baby but don’t have to post dumb pictures
It was dumb when Rachel McAdams did it and it is more ridiculous that you are creating your own version of this. Big deal….celebrities breast feed.
