A Michigan grandmother is calling for her granddaughter’s former daycare to be closed down after watching some disturbing security footage of the baby being attacked.
The incident occurred when Jennifer Travis dropped off 1-year-old Melanie at New Beginnings Child Care and Academy in Detroit last week, according to WXYZ.
That’s where she said the baby girl was left with a bite mark on her cheek and bruising from another child.
The grandmother was angered when she watched security footage from the daycare. It allegedly showed Melanie was left unsupervised for a period of time. Travis said:
“I’m screaming like where are the teachers. There’s no teachers in here. How do you care about kids, how are you in this job and you just leave out.”
In the video, another child runs towards Melanie and hits her. The grandmother said:
“It was just very traumatizing to watch… We watched the video of this little girl attacking my granddaughter.”
Now, Travis wants the daycare to be closed down to protect other children. She told WXYZ:
“I think that it needs to be closed. I think the owner doesn’t need to run daycares.”
The owner, Bernda Atterberry, said in a statement that the staff member who made a “poor decision” has been fired.
The statement read:
My staff are certified and very caring with all of the children. Unfortunately, because of one of my staff who have been working in child care for over five years and never had any incidents, she made a poor decision, which caused harm to a child. Child care licensing was notified immediately. The staff were immediately terminated.
A police report was filed about the incident. Travis has removed Melanie from the daycare and is in search of a new one.
It’s unclear if the parents of the other child responsible are aware of the situation.
New Beginnings Child Care and Academy only had one past violation, which was for giving a child with a peanut allergy peanut butter.
