George Clooney Compares Treatment of Meghan Markle to Princess Diana: ‘We All Know How That Turned Out’

George Clooney is speaking out in defense of his friend, Meghan Markle, after learning a personal letter she handwrote to her father was made public.

While on a press tour for his latest movie, Clooney was asked about the Duchess of Sussex and how she has been treated by the public.

And the actor did not hold back, even comparing Markle to her husband’s late mother, Princess Diana.

After clarifying that he is not going to be the godfather to their unborn child, because he “has enough sh*t to deal with” being the father twins, he told Who magazine:

“I do want to say, they’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she’s been pursued and vilified.”

Clooney, who attended Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding, continued:

“She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was and its history repeating itself.

We’ve seen how that ends. I can’t tell you how frustrating that is, just seeing them broadcast a letter from a daughter to a father, she’s getting a raw deal there and I think it’s irresponsible and I’m surprised by that.”

The father of two’s comments comes just a day after Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, made the five-page letter she wrote him in August 2018 public.

As Dearly previously reported, Thomas told the Daily Mail that he believed Prince Harry was behind the letter that he described as “cold,” leaving him devasted.

The letter, in part, revealed Markle questioning her father’s alleged lies, saying that his actions — as well as the action of other family members — left her “crumbled inside” and “broken my heart into a million pieces.”

Clooney’s comments are closely related to what Prince Harry has said in the past.

When Markle and Harry first started dating, Harry released this statement in 2016 after she had become the target of abuse. It read, in part:

His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments. Some of it has been hidden from the public – the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life.

Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game’. He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.

It’s unclear how much direct contact Clooney has had with Markle since she became an official member of the royal family.
