Yet amid the birth celebration, some fans slammed the happy new mom and dad for the baby announcement photo posted to Instagram.
In a television interview airing on OWN December 8, the couple opened up about the harsh criticism they received online after Union suffered from eight or nine miscarriages before welcoming her long-awaited baby via surrogate.
As reported by People, in a clip from the special “Oprah at Home with Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade & Their New Baby” Union told Winfrey:
“I’m already getting choked up. It’s still hard to let go.”
Union shared a picture of herself holding Kaavia skin-to-skin in a hospital bed while Wade looked down on his wife and newborn. But people slammed the mom for “acting like she gave birth to her baby.”
Responding to the post, Union’s followers wrote on Instagram:
Don’t get it, if she didn’t gave birth why she is all dressed up like she was.
Why are you in a hospital bed? Lol maybe you need your mental state checked! That isn’t normal.
I’m wondering the same thing surrogate is special and I’m happy for them but I was confused of why she has the look like she just gave birth sweating and all maybe its just for the photo.
“Everyone started talking about why she acting like she just had a baby.”
As previously reported by Dearly, Union has been candid in the past about suffering through several agonizing years of infertility. The 46-year-old opened up in her 2017 memoir about her struggles to conceive. She wrote:
“For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant.”
Union explains to Winfrey that her failed attempts to carry a baby full term contributed to the decision to use the photo.
The interview will air Dec. 8 at 8 p.m. ET on OWN.
