A Florida man is behind bars after police said he lied about what caused devastating burns on a 2-year-old baby girl who was in his care.

According to WFLA, 26-year-old Florida man Jonathan Lee Howard was caring for the child over the weekend when something went terribly wrong.

On Sunday, the baby girl was taken to a local hospital covered in “second-degree burns” on most of her small body. The injuries covered her “scalp, torso, arm, vagina, buttocks and leg,” according to WFLA.

Howard told Pasco County sheriff’s deputies that the child, who is of unknown relation to the man, was burned on Saturday when a lighter exploded while he was asleep.

But when doctors took a look at the 2-year-old’s injuries, they knew something was off about Howard’s story.

According to Fox 13, hospital staff advised police that the child’s burns were consistent with being scalded with hot liquid. And when police questioned the 26-year-old, he confessed about what really happened.

On Sunday, Howard admitted to the authorities that he had poured “hot water on the child,” causing the little girl to suffer severe burns.

To make matters worse, the Florida man said that he didn’t even bother to get the child medical attention until the next day.

Howard is now behind bars after being charged with child neglect. He is currently being held at the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center on $10,000 bond, reported Fox 4.

The little girl is currently on the road to recovery after receiving burns to most of her body. It’s currently unclear how her parents are reacting to the crime or why she was in Howard’s care.

The 26-year-old Dade City resident is expected to face a judge for the first time on Monday afternoon. You can watch WFLA’s coverage below:
