A 19-year-old pregnant woman from Brooklyn, New York, was excited for her very first baby — but now she’s fighting for her life.
Tytianna Sparks, who is five months pregnant, had just finished washing her clothes at a local laundromat on Sunday when she was shot multiple times by an unknown suspect in broad daylight.
Two bullets struck her in the head, according to WPIX. Her family said she was just an “innocent bystander.”Screenshot/NBC New York
A witness at the scene, Mohamed Zokari, told NBC New York that he heard the commotion and found the young mom-to-be laying on the ground. He said:
“As soon as I heard the gunshots, I opened the window, heard the screaming. I saw her laying on the floor, so I called 911.”
Yvonne Stevenson, another witness, said that she saw Sparks’s shocked niece leaning over the injured mom-to-be right after the shooting. She told the New York Daily News:
“She was kneeling over her trying to help her and hold her. She was in shock as well. When they turned her around, you seen blood coming out her face and head.”
The woman’s devastated mother, Ruth Sparks, was out shopping for presents for the baby when her daughter was shot; the baby shower was scheduled to take place later this month.
The pregnant woman was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center in critical condition. Amazingly, she was conscious before she went into surgery, according to her sister, Corinne Sparks.Screenshot/WPIX
She told the New York Daily News:
“When I got there they said she’s conscious, she’s all right. The baby’s all right and God is good because it could’ve been the other way around. It could’ve been her and the baby dead.”
The family said that one bullet went clean through the pregnant woman’s head, and another left small fragments in her brain.
But she and her baby are expected to be OK.
According to WPIX, police have confirmed that the pregnant woman was not the intended target for the violent attack, but they have yet to identify a suspect in the horrific crime.
Sparks’ family has asked the shooter to “come forward” after nearly taking the life of Sparks and her unborn baby.
Her family decided not to cancel the mom-to-be’s baby shower as she continues to recover from the shooting. You can watch interview’s from Sparks’ family below.
