Sean “Diddy” Combs is starting to open up publicly about the impact his late ex Kim Porter has had on his role as a father.

As Dearly previously reported, the 47-year-old model and actress died at her home on November 15, 2018.

As People reports, the mom died of lobar pneumonia, after suffering from flu-like symptoms for days prior.

In an interview for the May issue of Essence magazine, Diddy revealed the words Porter said to him days before her death that has stuck with him the most.

He said:

“Three days before she passed, she wasn’t feeling well. She had the flu, and she sent the kids over to my house so they wouldn’t get sick. One night I was checking on her, and she was like, ‘Puffy, take care of my babies.’ She actually said that to me before she died.”

Combs and Porter share three kids together — son Christian, 21, and 12-year-old twin daughters Jessie James and D’Lila. Diddy also helped raise Porter’s son Quincy, 27, from a previous relationship.

He is also father to daughter, Chance, and son, Justin, from previous relationships of his own.

Diddy told Essence that the day Porter died “turned my world upside down.” Immediately after hearing the news, he thought about the children. He said he could hear Kim’s voice.

Combs recalled:

“I jumped into mommy mode. I sent people in every direction to try to make sure the kids would not hear about it on social media or the news… Every time Kim and I talked, it was about the kids. It was what she cared about the most…

On some level I knew she was training me for this. I knew that I had to be ready to do whatever I was supposed to do if something like this ever happened. There was screaming and crying when I heard the news, of course, but I had to ask myself, What would Kim do? I was scared, and I was crying out to God—and to her—and almost immediately Kim’s voice kicked in, and I could hear her saying, ‘Make sure you take care of my babies.'”

In other words, she’d made him a better father. Diddy said his family has become more of a focus in his life.

He said:

Before this, I was a part-time father, you know? My family was always first, but there are countless times when I chose work over everything else. But every day I can hear her telling me to go and spend some time with the kids and make sure everybody’s all right, like she would do. I’m just a lot more present, and, most important, now my kids come before anything else in my life.

The proud father said that his entire family has come together to overcome this unexpected loss.

Diddy said his family loves each other more than ever. He credits that to Porter.
