Actress Denise Richards is one busy mom.
The 47-year-old stars on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” while raising her three daughters, Sam, 14, Lola, 13, and Eloise, 7.
Richards said it’s not always easy bringing up kids in the spotlight. She told People:
“I’m most proud of raising my kids, especially in a time that is very different from how I was raised. It’s extremely hard to keep children grounded. This is not an easy time to grow up.”
And the star has now revealed that her youngest daughter has special needs.
Richards told the outlet that a chromosomal disorder “has caused a lot of developmental delays for [Eloise].”
Richards was a single mom in 2011 when she decided to adopt Eloise, following her divorce from ex-husband Charlie Sheen.
As a baby, the mom noticed her daughter wasn’t hitting some normal milestones. She said:
“She wasn’t able to sit up on her own for a very long time, and she didn’t start walking until she was two, and that was with physical therapy.”
It wasn’t until two and a half years ago that doctors found the problem — a deletion in chromosome eight.
Though Richards didn’t specify her daughter’s chromosomal disorder, a deletion on chromosome eight can cause developmental delay and behavioral problems, according to DoveMed.
The mom told People:
“She can only say a handful of words. And there are times when she feels like her age in understanding, and then other times where it feels she’s emotionally 3 years old. It’s been challenging. I’m learning every day because they don’t really have a road map for her particular case.”
Though it sometimes a challenge, Richards said it’s an opportunity for her to step up as a mother. The actress said:
“Every child is different. You take care of your children no matter what is going on with them. I don’t know if [Eloise] is ever going to talk like a typical child. But as a parent, you want what’s best for your children, and you just do it.”
Richards is raising her daughters alongside her husband, Aaron Phypers, whom she tied the knot to in September after a secret engagement.
The mom and her family will be featured on the upcoming ninth season of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.”
