Wesley Mathews punished his 3-year-old adopted daughter, Sherin Mathews, because she wouldn’t drink her milk.

The Texas dad forced his young daughter to stand outside alone at 3 a.m. on Saturday, according to CBS DFW.

But she was nowhere to be found when he came back for her 15 minutes later.

The police report explains:

Wesley Mathews said he directed his daughter to stand near a large tree … because she wouldn’t drink her milk. At approximately 3:15 a.m., he went back to the spot where he directed his daughter to stay and she was gone.

Making her disappearance even more frightening is the spot where he left Sherin, as he allegedly knew it was a dangerous location.

According to the police report:

Wesley Mathews later told [the detective] he knew coyotes had been seen in the alley where he left his daughter.

As NBC DFW reports, an Amber Alert was issued for the missing child on Saturday and is still active now while the search continues.

While they continue to search for the girl, Sgt. Kevin Perlich admits that he has some questions — such as why did the parents wait hours before reporting she was gone:

“Why was the last sighting at 3 o’clock and the parents not call us until after 8 a.m., that’s the question we want answered as well. As far as why she was out there, how long she was out there, that’s the questions we have for the parents.”

Following the girl’s disappearance, Mathews was arrested and placed in a Richardson, Texas, jail. He was charged with child endangerment for leaving his now-missing child alone outside before she vanished.

There were no signs of abduction found during the search, according to NBC DFW. Police have towed three cars from the family’s property to search for evidence as the investigation into her disappearance continues.

Surprised neighbors have stepped in to speak about the family’s good relationship with the child.

A neighbor, who chose to keep his identity concealed, said the parents were excited to bring Sherin into their home after facing problems conceiving on their own — they had adopted her a year after they finally gave birth to a child:

“They felt since God gave them that baby as a miracle baby, they could help another little one without a family out.”

Jose Cherian, a member of the family’s church, described loving parents who cared for their child:

“The parents are also loving, they loved Sherin very much, They take care of her very much.”

Police described the child as having “developmental issues and has limited verbal communication skills.” She is 3 feet tall and weighs 22 pounds. The girl has black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen in a pink top and black pajama bottoms with pink flip-flops.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Richardson Police Department at 972-744-4800.
