California couple Alex and Jess Monney were excited to start renovating a bathroom in their home this week.

Even though Jess is expecting, she wrote on Twitter that she loves home improvement projects and was ready to get going on the plans.

She wrote:

If you know me, you know I love house projects. However, even I think I might be a little crazy for kicking off a bathroom remodel 4 weeks before I’m due. Bye bye bathroom! ?? And sorry in advance for the bathroom remodel updates to come.

However, the couple’s contractor made an unexpected find when they opened up the bathroom wall, said Alex.

It was a note from the previous homeowners left 23 years prior. Alex shared an image of the find in a now-deleted tweet.

The former owners had taped a photo of themselves to the wall and included a note that read:

Hi! We’re the Shinsekis! We remodeled this bathroom Summer 1995. If you are reading this, that means you’re remodeling the bathroom again. What’s wrong with the way we did it?!?!?

The message, dated 1995, also included a photo and information about their pet rabbit.

Though the couple who wrote the message haven’t been identified, Alex told NBC Bay Area that he’s thankful to them:

“Thank you for the note. It gave us a lot of smiles. It brought a lot of laughter to our life. Your bathroom was great. Sorry, for messing with it.”

One user on Twitter claimed that the man in the photo is his younger brother, but this hasn’t been confirmed.

The Monneys have since left their own note inside the bathroom wall, inspired by what the Shinsekis wrote 23 years ago.
