A Utah couple shared their heartwarming and emotional story about what brought their family together, and many called their adoption journey a real-life “This is Us” experience.
Shanna and Joseph Weight of Elk Ridge told Inside Edition about the joy of adopting their son, Milo, through an agency, but they never imagined that five years later, they would also be adopting his little sister.
Just five months ago, they thought their family was complete, but then they got a call from the same adoption agency and learned that Milo’s mom was pregnant again.
In Shanna’s blog, she shared the heartbreaking story of what led to adopting her firstborn nine years into her marriage. She opened up about struggling to conceive after suffering from body image issues.
She said that eventually, she and her husband decided to pursue the process of adoption and were connected with a young 18-year-old mom who wanted a better life for her son.
Joseph told Good Morning America:
“She was a young mom and she had grown up with a lot of siblings from a lot of different fathers. She never knew her dad so she wanted her child to have something better than what she had.”
Then two years later, Shanna got pregnant and gave birth to her biological son, Nash. However, the mom said nothing could have prepared her for what would happen next. Joseph recalled:
“They contacted us and said, ‘Milo is going to be a big brother’ and asked if we would consider adopting his sister. At the time I was like, ‘That’s a big one.'”
Shanna told Inside Edition:
“My first thought was like, ‘We can’t do this.’ But if she was supposed to come home with us, all the other stuff doesn’t matter and it will work itself out.”
Then little Milo heard the news about his little sister. Joseph told GMA:
“I [told Milo], ‘Your birth mom is pregnant’ and he started jumping up and down. He pointed his finger right in my face and said, ‘We’re bringing home that baby.'”
Shanna, however, admits she was hesitant to start the adoption process all over again.
The mom of three explained:
“I knew it was going to complicate our lives … but it really came down to the fact that if she’s supposed to come home, and I’m supposed to be her mom, then I’m supposed to be her mom.”
The Weight family adopted Milo, 5, in 2013 and then adopted Milo’s sister, 3-month-old Onni, in 2019.
Shanna said she’s humbled by the fact she was chosen to be Milo’s and Onni’s mom.
