Celebrity mom and singer Ciara admitted that the idea of waiting until marriage was really hard when NFL quarterback Russell Wilson first told her he wanted to remain celibate while dating.
Eventually, Ciara was totally on board but needed extra time in prayer up until the couple’s wedding day and honeymoon.
In her cover story for InStyle‘s April issue, the mother of two opened up about her relationship with Wilson, 30.
The 33-year-old said on their first date in 2015, they both “knew.” She explained:
“We both had that light-bulb moment.”
In 2017, the “Level Up” singer and model told Cosmopolitan South Africa that the Seattle Seahawks quarterback actually approached her with the abstinence pledge due to his religious beliefs.
She and her now-husband abstained from sex before their wedding day, but Ciara jokingly told InStyle that it was no easy task:
“That took a lot of prayer. It was hard. I can’t lie.”
As reported by the Daily Mail, Wilson said back in 2015:
“I said to her – and she completely agreed – ‘Can we love each other without that?’ If you can love somebody without that, then you can really love somebody.”
After coming out of a tumultuous relationship with rapper Future, who is the father of her first child, 4-year-old Future, Ciara discussed the benefits of waiting with Cosmopolitan South Africa.
“I really believe that when you focus on a friendship, you have the opportunity to build a strong foundation for a relationship — and once you know you’re really great friends and you’re what we call ‘equally yoked,’ where you share the same values or the same outlook on life, it kind of sets the tone.
Knowing that you’ll always have the friendship and that you can always go back to it is very important, and very powerful.”
Wilson and Ciara wed in 2016. They have one child together, 2-year-old daughter Sienna.
