Chip Gaines is opening up about exactly how he made the transition from a happy bachelor to an even happier husband.
According to People, the HGTV star, 44, wasn’t ready to settle down before he met his wife Joanna.
“I really wasn’t that guy. I dated girls whose goal in life was to get married and have kids. They had it all planned out, but I was too selfish. It was about me and what I wanted to do, and I didn’t have anything tying me down.”
However, that all changed when he met his future wife in 2001 while working at her father’s Firestone automotive shop in Waco, Texas.
Additionally, Chip told People:
“It felt like there was this real transition. I matured and grew up.It just kind of clicked in my brain: ‘This is going to work.’”
Although he happily married Joanna in 2003, it still took him some time to adapt to his new life.
“I had to make a lot of changes. I had to be a better person. But when I thought about the idea of being an 80-year-old man sitting on a rocking chair with my beautiful wife, and for she and I to have made it [that far], I got really excited.”
And so far, so good. The couple recently celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary and share five children.
“I tell my kids this a lot. She’s the one that makes this whole thing go around.”
Furthermore, the couple’s new TV network is set to replace Discovery’s DIY Network in the summer of 2020, Dearly reported.
