The American Music Awards started with a fiery performance from Taylor Swift, an epic dance number by host Tracey Ellis Ross, and the first award of the night, which went to rapper Cardi B.

What do all of these artists have in common? They are all women, and two of them are mothers.

After winning the award for Best Hip-Hop Artist, Cardi B took to the microphone to give her acceptance speech.

The rapper first thanked her team and her record label before thanking Jesus, her husband, and their infant daughter.

The new mom said she wanted to thank her daughter because of all the people who told her she wouldn’t be successful in the music industry after becoming a mother:

“I really wanna thank my daughter. And not just because she’s my daughter, but when I was pregnant I was just so influenced to be like, ‘Yo, I gotta do this. I gotta show people wrong. I gotta prove people wrong.’ Cause they said I wasn’t gonna make it after I had a baby.”

Cardi B and her husband welcomed their daughter Kulture on July 10.

Earlier this year, the proud mom dropped out of touring the country with Bruno Mars after becoming a mother. At the time she wasn’t ready, but she promised to continue making music despite not going on tour.

In a recent interview with People, Cardi B said:

“Four weeks after giving birth, I was supposed to start rehearsals for a fall tour with Bruno Mars and I couldn’t even squat down. …

People don’t really talk about what you go through after pregnancy. They don’t tell you that you get stitches down there or that your first two weeks you’re constipated. Or that you get contractions because of breastfeeding. I wasn’t expecting that. When Kulture was born, I felt like I was a kid again; everything was making me cry, and I needed a lot of love.”

The 25-year-old added that the nay-sayers almost got to her, asking her husband if he thought her career would be over after becoming a mother:

”’You think my career’s going to be over?’ And he kept saying, ‘I don’t know how you don’t see it, but you so hot right now, nothing could get in your way. You just have to work hard and put out a poppin’ album. I think you should keep the baby.'”

Cardi’s story just goes to show moms can do anything they put their minds to.
