A lifelong scout and United States veteran said his mind was blown after watching a young boy scout kneel during The Pledge of Allegiance.
According to WNCN, 10-year-old Liam Holmes took a knee during a city council meeting he was at in Durham, North Carolina.
It was a move he discussed with his father prior to the council meeting. His father told WNCN he wasn’t sure if once the meeting began if his son would actually follow through with his plan.
And when the dad actually saw Liam kneel during the Pledge of Allegiance, he said he couldn’t be more proud of his son:
“When he did it I was really surprised and also really proud of him.”
The dad even tweeted about his son’s actions on Twitter:
When asked why he decided to take a knee in the first place, Liam told WNCN:
“What I did was took a knee against racial discrimination, which is basically when people are mean to other people of different colors.”
Liam continued by saying the mayor thanked him for his protest and so did others on Twitter. Mayor Steve Schewel said in a statement:
“Thank you, councilman, and thank you, scouts. To the scout that expressed his conscience by kneeling, we will say we endorse and appreciate all expressions of conscience in Durham City Council.”
While others added:
@Kaepernick7 this is how you’ve influenced people!

The boys scouts are taught tolerance in an intolerable society. Good for that young man.

However, some weren’t too fond of Liam’s actions.
United States Veteran Brandon LaRoque, who was present at the council meeting, said he wasn’t expecting to see a young boy scout kneel:
“It just blew my mind that this was Cub Scouts and politics. Part of the scout oath is to God and your country, and I understand people have the right to freedom of speech. I just don’t understand why it has to be during the Pledge of Allegiance.”
And more people on Twitter wrote:
He is part of a Scout Troop. Doing things together. Not to embarrass each other or stand alone doing something different but to stand in unity. Learning…striving to do our best… together. Recite the Scout Oath and respect it. Glad none of these guys took a knee years ago. pic.twitter.com/2TurrIXYGs

Just something so wrong with that! Boy, when I was younger and did that type of disrespect to the uniform! I would have been grounded, it only happened once! I learned to tuck in my shirt and respect the Boy Scout uniform! pic.twitter.com/KBmtvffNKb

However, as WNCN reports Liam isn’t too worried about the naysayers, adding, “Well, those people just don’t listen.”
