Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell are still speechless after getting engaged on Irwin’s 21st birthday.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Irwin and Powell shared how excited they are about spending forever together. Powell also admitted that he always knew Irwin was “the one,” but the stars seemingly aligned for him when he decided to propose to her on her birthday.
As Bindi's mom, Terri, wrote on Twitter: "I am so very happy, and I know Steve would be too. Congratulations!!"

Powell added that his now-fiancée didn’t suspect a thing, and Irwin commended him on that.
Irwin also talked about her late father, Steve Irwin, not being around to celebrate these big milestones with her and her younger brother, Robert:
“I think that when the time comes and we do get married, I think that for me it will be really important that Robert walks me down the aisle and that’s something I really want to do. Ever since Dad passed away, as a little girl, you always think about your wedding day and I’m always so thankful that Robert is there and he has been such a big part of my life. He’s always stepped up and been the one to give me a hug when I need it and encourage me forward in life. […]
I think that will make it really special and I think Dad would have wanted that way as well.”
As a result of her father not being able to celebrate with her and Powell, the 21-year-old called the moment she got engaged “bittersweet” because there are people who were in her life that she wishes she could celebrate with.
However, Irwin firmly believes that Steve would have loved Powell and would have been so excited to see her find her partner in life. Irwin recalled a text she received from her mom, Terri Irwin, the night of her engagement:
“She said, ‘I’m so proud of you. And I’m so excited that we welcomed Chandler into the family.’ But, she said, ‘No one would have been more excited than your dad and he would have just cried all day.’ And I said that so special because everyone looks at Dad like he was the strongest person in the whole world. And yet whenever I would accomplish something big in life, from the time I was a little girl, he would always tear up. […]
I wish so much that he could be here to reveal in this time, but I suppose in a way he is. His spirit lives on in all of us. I could feel his energy on the day, I really could.”
The couple also revealed that they will be getting married in 2020 and that the ceremony will take place at Australian Zoo, the same place they got engaged and the same place they met.
