The newborn who was cut from his mother’s womb continues to reach milestones despite the fight ahead of him.
According to NBC 10, last month, a 19-year-old mother-to-be was murdered in Chicago. A mother and her daughter have been arrested in connection with the crime.
Police say Marlen Ochoa-Lopez was strangled before her unborn child was “forcibly removed” from her womb reportedly by 46-year-old Clarisa Figueroa and her 24-year-old daughter Desiree Figueroa on April 23.
Ochoa-Lopez’s body was found outside of Clarisa’s apartment after Clarisa called 911 to say she had just given birth and her baby wasn’t breathing.
Ochoa-Lopez was first reported missing by her husband.
Medical personnel said Clarisa had blood on her person but didn’t show any physical signs of having just given birth.
The mother and daughter, along with Clarisa’s boyfriend, have been arrested. Her boyfriend, 40-year-old Piotr Bobak, was charged with the concealment of a homicide.
The infant is still on life support. He was visited by his father Sunday night. The baby boy has been named Yovanny Jardiel. Yovanny’s father said his son was able to open his eyes for the first time briefly during his visit. His family is calling him a “fighter” and still have hopes that he will recover.
As WRAL reports, despite this small milestone, Yovanny is still in “grave condition.”
During a press conference, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson revealed that Clarisa wanted to raise the infant as her own after her adult son passed away of natural causes:
“Words cannot express how disgusting and thoroughly disturbing these allegations are.”
Ochoa-Lopez and Clarisa reportedly first met on social media.
Days following Ochoa-Lopez’s death, on May 7, one of her friends revealed screenshots of a conversation Ochoa-Lopez had with her accused killer.
According to WBBM, the comments revealed that Clarisa was claiming to be due in May and was looking to meet other moms with similar due dates.
Ochoa-Lopez was one of the other women to reach out.
Police are also looking into how Advocate Christ Medical Center handled the situation after Clarisa was brought to the hospital claiming to have just given birth. Authorities say they were never contacted by the medical center and the center itself declined to comment on the allegations.
