A North Carolina newlywed was put behind bars last week after he allegedly murdered his young wife with a knife.

Matthew Phelps told police he awoke from a nightmare early Friday morning in the couple’s Raleigh home to find his wife, Lauren, dead, according to earlier reports.

The panicked husband told police:

“I had a dream and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor. … There’s blood all over me, and there’s a bloody knife on the bed. I think I did it.”

His excuse? Coricidin Cough and Cold medicine. The husband said he took more of the drug than he “should have” and didn’t remember killing Lauren.

But a further look into the seemingly perfect husband, who was studying missions and evangelism, reveals he may have had a dark alter ego.

According to “Inside Edition,” Matthew went by the name “Marty Radical” online and posted disturbing images and quotes to his social media accounts.

The husband started frequently posting images of fictional serial killer Patrick Bateman from the slasher film “American Psycho” to his now-deleted Instagram in May.

He even quoted some of the killer’s most chilling lines, including:

“…My pain is constant and sharp, and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape…”

But that’s not the worst of it — the Instagram profile is filled with satanic images. One photo even includes a caption stating that his followers “need Satan.”

Matthew’s hidden Tumblr account, which has also been deleted, also revealed some disturbing personal information, according to “Inside Edition.”

The alleged killer often posted lengthy journal entries about his frequent “nightmares” and posted more creepy images.

Though it was last active in September 2015, some of his posts reveal some disturbing truths. Apparently, Matthew has been plagued by terrible bad dreams since childhood. He wrote in a post:

Ever since I was little, I’ve had some strong activity with my dreams. Nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking, hallucinations, and controlled dreams have all filled my life so far.

Shortly after the killing, the husband told police he took so much cough medicine the night he killed his wife because “it can make you feel good and sometimes [he] can’t sleep at night.”

The newlywed has officially been charged with murder and is being held at the Wake County Jail.
