Singer Aaron Carter last made headlines after opening up about some serious health issues. He revealed three weeks ago that at just 19 years old, he was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia.
According to the Mayo Clinic, a hiatal hernia occurs when part of one’s stomach pushes upward through their diaphragm, causing heartburn, chest or abdominal pain, and feeling especially full after meals.
In a now-deleted series of tweets, Carter wrote that because of the hernia, he’s been unable to gain weight — which has been an ongoing source of bullying, according to the pop star:
By the way y’all wanna know why I’m so skinny? It’s because @ 19, I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, I didn’t choose that. be kind to me.
He continued, saying that his past addiction and substance abuse issues were over and that his thin stature really was stemming from his health problems:
I’m sorry, sometimes I really wish I did look better, or I eat more like y’all say, this life doesn’t come w [sic] much stability. If you don’t believe me ask my brother he was there when I was 19 diagnosed. It’s a stress eating disorder, I’m sorry I didn’t choose this.
No I don’t do drugs, yes I feel pain, I haven’t stopped working since I was 7 years old 22 years later and I still won’t give up.
Carter has been notably open about his past struggles with drug addiction. In April of last year, he sat down with “Entertainment Tonight” and spoke candidly about his 2011 stint in rehab. When asked whether he was still sober or not, he responded that sobriety isn’t so black and white for him:
“I drink wine. I smoke weed. I have anxiety problems, I take medication for anxiety. I mean, it’s just what it is. The misconceptions are that I’m a meth head, or I’m a crackhead, or I’m a drug addict, or I’m this or that.”
However, Carter’s sobriety is being called into question again. Although up until recently he’d been thought to be on the up and up, unfortunately, his drinking and marijuana habits have once again landed him in trouble.
On Saturday night around 9 p.m., Carter was pulled over in Habersham County, Georgia, and was quickly taken into custody, according to CNN.
The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to People that Carter was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, and possession of drug-related objects.
TMZ also reported that Carter, at the time he was pulled over, refused to comply with taking a breathalyzer and drug test.
Carter was still in custody as of Sunday morning, according to People, and his bond was set at $4,610. Then in an update, TMZ reported that, at around 11:51 a.m., Carter was released after posting bond.
CNN reported that his girlfriend, Madison Parker, was also arrested. She, too, was still in police custody as of Sunday morning on a $4,360 bond.
She was charged with possession of marijuana, obstruction of law enforcement officers and possession of drug-related objects, according to People.
Carter’s account tweeted that the singer would be unable to make his upcoming Kansas City performance Saturday night just hours prior to his arrest:
The tweet read, in part:
He promises to come back soon. He apologizes to his fans in KC and Mix93.3.
All charges filed against both Carter and his girlfriend are misdemeanor offenses. According to the singer’s social media accounts, he’s set to debut some of his new music in just two days in Alabama — it’s unclear if those tour dates will change or not.
