On Saturday afternoon, a Washington father placed a loaded gun under his mattress after he grew concerned about crime that occurred in the area and heard noises.

The father and his girlfriend, who was eight months pregnant, were watching television in bed when their 3-year-old son grabbed the gun, KIRO reports.

The boy, who turned four on Sunday, fired the weapon before the parents could react. King County Sgt. Ryan Abbott said:

“He (the child) found a handgun that was unsecured there and he grabbed it, and before anyone knew what happened, heard a pop sound. And the mom was shot on her face area.”

The 27-year-old mother was rushed to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Later the night, her aunt told KIRO that she was awake and talking:

“My niece was shot. She was shot but she’s doing okay.”

Last month, a new law went into effect in the county that requires gun owners to secure their weapon or face a possible felony.

Authorities are still working to determine if the father could face charges for not locking up the weapon. Abbott told KOMO:

“I think the hope going forward is that guns are locked up in people houses so something tragic like this doesn’t happen. Because now this child is going to be affected forever and we’re hoping and praying the mom is ok in this situation.”

The father said he borrowed the weapon from a friend. Police are still working to determine who the owner is.

It’s unclear if the gunshot wound to the head at all affected the mom’s unborn baby.

Abbott said he hopes the accident will serve as a warning to others. He told KIRO:

“I think the most important message here is make sure your gun is locked up.”

I think that the father should have to pay a large fine, have the gun taken away, and not allowed ever again to own or borrow a gun.

No way, absolutely not!! The Father had no bad intent. If anything he was armed to help protect his family. He should have NO CHARGES!!!
We do not live it a perfect world. With crime rate height. I give this father credit for doing what he can do to protect his family. Good for him that he did have a gun to protect his loved ones. It sad and very unfortunate this happened unfortunately accidents do happen.
I hope and pray all is well with mother, baby and child and father.
If more decent people had guns in their homes the dam criminals would think twice before committing a crime. Proven facts!! Crime rate dropped to nearly 0 in Kennasaw Ga when mayor told resident to have a loaded gun in their homes. This was becoming a high crime area. Once that law was passed the crime rate dropped like a rock

I think our society should focus on getting better instead of needing a gun being just a normal part of life.

I don’t think the 4 year old did anything. He’s the scape goat.

I smell a cover up! Most 3 yr olds don’t have the strength to pull the trigger on most guns. Plus if the parents were on the bed and the gun was under the mattress HOW was a 3 yr old able to get the gun out from all the weight???

That was my thought! How does a new 4 year old have the strength to pull the trigger? Unless…the father had it cocked and ready. Then a simple pull of the trigger can happen. I’m thinking he was messing around with the gun, it fired and now hes blaming the 4 year old knowing he wont be in trouble.
