Katarina Zarutskie was on vacation with her boyfriend and his family in the Bahamas when she posed for a photo and got bitten by a shark.
Zarutskie saw other people swimming by a group of nurse sharks, which are known to be tame, when she saw a photo opportunity, Buzzfeed reports.
She asked her boyfriend's dad to take a photo of her with the nurse sharks. When she got into the water, she started to float on her back to pose for the photo.
As her boyfriend's father started to take photos of her, a shark came up and bit her hand.
Then, the shark pulled her down into the water.
Once her hand was free from the shark's grip, she put her hand up in the air to prevent any of the other sharks from smelling blood.
Zarutskie posted the series of photos her boyfriend's dad took of the incident on her Instagram. She captioned the post:
PSA: Sharks are cute and can nibble at times if not careful 🐠
She told Buzzfeed that she saw many other people swim with nurse sharks before and that she's lucky to still have her hand. The 19-year-old said:
“It was a testament to how calm I stayed.”
Zarutskie said the whole thing was a learning lesson.
The model, who has over 30,000 followers on Instagram, had to take antibiotics while recovering from the shark bite to help combat the potentially infectious bacteria the shark may have been carrying.
But she's expected to make a full recovery.
