For six years, WWE superstar turned actor John Cena dated fellow WWE superstar Nikki Bella.

The pair made headlines while filming their reality television show, “Total Bellas,” when it was revealed that Cena had made Bella sign a 75-page agreement before she moved into his home.

As Independent Journal Review reported, Cena compared his agreement — which closely resembled a prenup —  to buying a gun for self defense. Cena has been divorced before and said the agreement was to make sure nothing happened to his fortune. He said at the time:

“Having been through that process this is the way I view it: it is like buying a handgun for home defense. It gives you a sense of security, it gives you a failsafe in case something happens, and those who buy a handgun for self defense, pray they never have to use it. Without it, it’s a dog fight. With it, it is very easy.”

He explained that many of his family members rely on him, so it was important that he keep his financials safe:

"This is what my life is, this is what it’s become. You’ve met my family. You think my mom paid for that house herself? She didn’t. My brother lives in that house, they are expecting a child. My younger brother’s got medical problem, I’ve got to make sure he’s okay.

I try to be the best provider that I can. I just don’t ever want to be in a position where that’s in jeopardy."

Now it looks as though that agreement is going to come in handy.

The pair got engaged in April 2017, but days before they were set to get married Cena and Bella announced their break up on social media:

After much contemplation and six years of being together Nikki Bella and John Cena announced today their decision to separate as a couple. While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another. We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives.

People reports that early on in their relationship, Cena expressed that he didn't want to ever get married again — he divorced in 2012 — but eventually proposed to Bella during a WWE match on national television.

Bella is reportedly “devastated” by the break up.

According to People, Cena was getting “cold feet” as their wedding day drew near and that's when Bella reportedly gave him an “ultimatum.” A source told People:

“She never gave him an ultimatum. He talked a really good game about having changed, about having his priorities straight, about knowing what’s important, and that it was her. But as the day got closer, it was like he just went back to who he’s always been — which is someone who puts himself first, always. He’s an incredibly dedicated, driven, ambitious guy. And for the longest time he said he didn’t think he had room in his life for a spouse or kids. It seems like in the end that was still the truth.”

The source said Cena “ruined” everything:

“But in that case, he never should’ve proposed, let alone in front of millions of people. Now she’s heartbroken. [...] This was supposed to be the happiest time of her life. He ruined it and blew everything up.”

The source called Cena a “villain,” saying he has shown his true colors.

Aside from the statement posted on her Instagram account, Bella hasn't said much about the break up. Cena, on the other hand, took to Twitter to talk about hardship and loss:

He wrote:

Hardship, loss, and humility are extremely difficult waters to navigate, but perseverance thru them builds a strength to withstand anything life throws your way.

Interestingly enough, while promoting his new movie, “Blockers,” a few weeks ago he told the cameras that he wished he was already married to Bella.

Cena and Bella were set to get married in Mexico on May 5.
