Keya Wills said her mother had just undergone surgery and was taking a new medication that must have been too strong for the frail, older woman.
In an interview with WHIO, Wills said her mother lost consciousness as a result:
“My mom has been having a lot of different surgeries, and she's kind of sickly, and she has some new medications that she was taking that obviously was too strong and it made her pass out.”
Wills's mother happened to be caring for her granddaughter and Wills's niece, Ja’Coreyaa Nichols, at the time.
Wills's mother had just drawn a bath for the 7-month-old when she passed out. Police are now investigating the drowning death of Ja’Coreyaa, according to Cleveland.com.
Approximately 4.9 million children are raised solely by their grandparents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. An increasing number of children are being left in the care of grandparents, for reasons including the rising cost of child care, USA Today reports.
According to WHIO, Wills said her mother did have custody of the child at the time of the accident.
Although the official cause of Ja’Coreyaa's death has not been disclosed, the Dayton Daily News reports, Wills told reporters her niece drowned. A Dayton police spokesman said detectives with the special victims unit are awaiting autopsy results, though it is “suspected” the baby drowned.
Following the incident, the baby's grandmother was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Her condition is unknown at this time.
